IDENTIFICATION OF DEFICIENCY OF JOINT ATTENTION TO PRESCHOOLERS THROUGH ABILITY FOR DETECTION OF DIRECTION OF VIEW
Abstract
The article considers the problem of correlation of skills of joint attention and social and cognitive development of a child. The ability to detect the direction of the gaze as a mechanism for establishing dyadic interactions is analyzed. The goal was to identify manifestations of atypical joint attention when the child does not take into account which object (event) or which aspects of this object (event) are in the focus of attention of the interlocutor. In a sample of 81 typically developing children and children with mental retardation, the gaze-cueing paradigm was used to study the mechanisms of joint attention. For research, a computer application was developed with experimental tasks of using the direction of sight to determine the focus of attention of another person in various conditions. The idea was used to measure the reaction time using manual keystrokes when observing a change in the direction of the gaze as a signal that can cause reflective visual orientation. Based on the comparison of contrasting groups, differences in the reaction to the social stimulus of changing the direction of the gaze were revealed and markers of the violation of the reaction to changing the direction of the gaze as a mechanism for combining the focus of attention were highlighted. On the sample of children with mental retardation, the specifics of detecting mutual gaze against the allotted one, following in the direction of the partner's gaze, the ability to use the gaze for combined attention are analyzed.
