INFOGRAPHICS AND SMARTART TECHNOLOGIES IN EDUCATIONAL PROCESS IN UNIVERSITIES: USE AND EFFECTIVENESS EVALUATION

Abstract
Introduction: this paper addresses the issue of improving the effectiveness of the educational process through using new approaches to preparing and presenting educational material; the aim of this study is to theoretically substantiate and experimentally test the effectiveness of using infographics and SmartArt in teaching university disciplines. Materials and methods: the study includes analysis of scientific literature on the use of visualization technologies (SmartArt and infographics) in educational process of Russian and international universities; surveys and questionnaires; statistical data analysis methods (Spearman’s correlation test, Wilcoxon’s method, etc.), R tools for statistical calculations. Results: the literature analysis demonstrates the effectiveness of using visualization technologies to improve the education quality in various fields, however, the evidence base for the effectiveness of such technologies in the educational process is built primarily on a qualitative rather than quantitative basis; this study quantitatively evaluates the effectiveness of infographics and SmartArt technologies in teaching economic and mathematical disciplines as an example and we found an evidence of a positive impact of such technologies on student comprehension of course materials. Conclusions: the theoretical and practical significance of this study is in expanded understanding of infographics and SmartArt technologies through the lens of increasing their effectiveness in university education process and their successful application in teaching specific economics-mathematics disciplines; the obtained results can be extrapolated to other university disciplines to deepen the understanding of the numerous and diverse ways in which modern visualization technologies influence the educational process, as well as the professional and personal development of modern university graduates.
